What Is an Automatic Transfer Switch?

An automatic transfer switch is a device that moves selected electrical loads between a utility supply and a backup generator when the primary source fails or returns. The switch senses source conditions, starts the transfer sequence, and helps prevent both sources from feeding the same circuit at once. It supports standby power systems.

Local relevance: Miami’s hurricane season can interrupt utility service, so generator transfer planning must account for backup loads, outdoor equipment exposure, and local permitting conditions.

Key Takeaways About Automatic Transfer Switch

  • It monitors utility power and controls backup source transfer.
  • Only connected, selected loads receive generator power.
  • It is not the same as a generator interlock kit.

How Automatic Transfer Switch Works

An automatic transfer switch monitors the utility source and detects a loss or unacceptable change in power. The switch signals the standby generator to start, then moves the connected loads to the generator after the source is ready. When utility power returns, the switch transfers the loads back and allows the generator to stop through its control sequence.

Transfer equipment is selected for the electrical system, the generator arrangement, and the loads that need backup power. A standby generator supplies the alternate source, while the transfer switch controls the connection between sources. A residential installation may serve selected equipment, such as refrigeration, lighting, or a cooling system, instead of the entire property.

From the Earth Electric team

When we handle generator transfer switch installation, we check the source connections, control wiring, grounding paths, and selected loads. We also test the transfer sequence so the generator starts, the switch changes sources, and utility power can return without an unintended overlap.

Automatic Transfer Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Miami home has a standby generator connected to an automatic transfer switch. During a utility outage, the switch starts the generator and supplies the home’s selected backup circuits after the generator reaches operating conditions.
