What Is MC Cable?

MC Cable is an electrical wiring assembly with insulated conductors enclosed in a flexible metal armor jacket. The armor protects the conductors from physical damage and can form part of the equipment grounding path when the cable and fittings are installed correctly. Electricians use MC Cable for exposed or concealed branch-circuit wiring.

Local relevance: Miami's humid, salt-laden coastal air can increase corrosion risk at exposed metal cable fittings, so installers inspect accessible armor and connectors during wiring work.

Key Takeaways About MC Cable

  • Metal armor distinguishes MC Cable from unarmored cable.
  • Proper fittings connect the armor to electrical boxes.
  • MC Cable is not the same as flexible conduit.

How MC Cable Works

MC Cable carries electrical current through insulated conductors inside a flexible metal armor jacket. The jacket resists physical contact and helps protect wiring as the cable passes through walls, ceilings, or finished spaces. Cable connectors secure each end to an Electrical Box and maintain the intended grounding path.

Electricians select MC Cable based on the circuit conductors, the installation environment, and the available fittings. During wiring repair, the cable may connect a panel to a receptacle, lighting outlet, or other branch-circuit point. A damaged jacket, loose connector, or exposed conductor can affect the installation and calls for a careful inspection. MC Cable differs from flexible conduit because the cable includes its conductors, while conduit serves as a raceway for separately installed wires.

From the Earth Electric team

When we inspect MC Cable, we check the armor, connectors, box entries, and visible conductor insulation. We also trace the circuit when needed to identify loose terminations, damaged sections, or wiring that does not match the existing installation. Our team documents the repair scope before replacing or extending cable.

MC Cable in Practice: A Real-World Example

A kitchen branch circuit may use MC Cable between an electrical panel and a receptacle box concealed inside a finished wall. During wiring repair, an electrician may replace a damaged section and verify that the new connectors hold the armor securely at each box.
