What Is a Tamper-Resistant Outlet?
A tamper-resistant outlet is a receptacle with internal shutters that block access to the energized contact openings unless matching pressure is applied to both openings at once. The design helps prevent objects from entering one opening alone. Tamper-resistant outlets serve rooms where children may access wall receptacles, while still accepting standard plugs.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-Resistant Outlet
- Internal shutters cover the contact openings.
- Normal plugs open both shutters together.
- Tamper-resistant does not mean surge-protected.
How Tamper-Resistant Outlet Works

Tamper-resistant outlet protection comes from spring-loaded shutters behind the faceplate openings. A plug applies equal pressure to both slots, which moves the shutters aside and allows the plug blades to reach the contacts. An object inserted into only one slot does not normally move the shutter mechanism.

The shutters operate mechanically, so the receptacle does not need electronics or a separate control signal. GFCI protection serves a different purpose by responding to current imbalance. A tamper-resistant outlet can include GFCI protection, but the two features address different electrical conditions. During outlet installation, the receptacle type must match the wiring, box, grounding arrangement, and intended location.

From the Earth Electric team
When we install a tamper-resistant outlet, we inspect the existing box, conductors, grounding, and connections before selecting the replacement. We also test that the shutters open with a standard plug and remain closed when pressure is applied to only one opening. Our team checks any separate GFCI function when the receptacle includes it.
Tamper-Resistant Outlet in Practice: A Real-World Example
A Miami homeowner replacing an accessible wall receptacle in a child's bedroom may choose a tamper-resistant outlet. The outlet accepts lamps and chargers normally while its internal shutters resist insertion of a single small object.
